Final Stats

NEWARK, NJ - Freshman Brittany Best (Norco, CA) led a balanced Sacred Heart attack with ten kills, eight digs and a pair of service aces to help the Pioneer women's volleyball team blank Loyola of Maryland 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-17) in the opening match of the New Jersey Institute of Technology Invitational Friday.

Sacred Heart, 5-3, was tied with Loyola at 10-10 in the opening game of the match but then ran off ten of the next 12 points to take a 20-12 lead. Sophomore Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek ran off three straight points on her serve in the Pioneer surge.

Game two was more of the same. The two teams were tied at 13-13 before SHU ran off nine straight points - eight of them off the serve of freshman Ashlyn Trimble (Thousand Oaks, CA). The Pioneers won the game 25-16.

The Pioneers cruised through the third game a little easier. Best and fellow freshman Maile Hetherington each had five kills as SHU closed out Loyola in three straight. Hetherington finished the match with nine kills.

SHU will play its second game of the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against UMBC and then face host NJIT at 4:00.
