Final Stats

NEWARK, NJ - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-21,22-25,25-22,25-22) decision to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Saturday afternoon in the New Jersey Institute of Technology Invitational, despite finishing the match with more total kills than the Retrievers.

A rash of errors on offense cost the Pioneers, making 32 to just 20 for UMBC. In fact, the Pioneers beat the Retrievers in just about every category except the final score.

Freshman Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) led SHU with 17 kills. Fellow rookie Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) finished with a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs.

After winning the second game 25-22 to even the match, the Pioneers were tied in the third 19-19. UMBC won six of the last nine points to take a 2-1 advantage, winning the game when Bridget Sheets and Sabrina Hoeks blocked an attempted kill by Trimble.

UMBC took control of the fourth game early, building a 14-8 advantage and keeping the Pioneers in their rearview mirror to close the match out.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-4, while UMBC improves to 8-2. SHU will take on host NJIT in the final match of the Invitational later this evening.
